The past year has been one of incredible growth for the Playing For Change Foundation. In September of this year, people in 41 countries across 6 continents came together for the first annual Playing For Change Day: a day of music and action to create social change through music. Thank you to everyone who participated in making our inaugural event a success!
In addition to planning our first global event, we’ve continued to support and strengthen our 7 programs in Mali, Ghana, Nepal, and South Africa, and we’re excited about plans for expansion into new communities in 2012. Nothing inspires us more than knowing that a child who has never been given the opportunity to learn an instrument, or play and dance with others, or in some cases to go to school of any kind, is now learning and thriving thanks to the support of their teachers and fellow students in a PFCF music program.
In Mali, one of those children is Nadjo who is learning the oral history and cultural traditions that have been passed down through 13 generations in his Griot village of Kirina. In Nepal, that child could be Sarju, who is for the first time in his life being treated as an equal by members of other castes; or Sushmita at the Mitrata orphanage in Kathmandu, who picked up a Sarangi for the first time and found that she had a natural talent just waiting to be discovered.
For these children – and all of the children in our programs – the opportunity to receive a music education means brighter days now, and hope for the future. And while they are a great part of the inspiration, the children aren’t the only ones in the communities who benefit from foundation programs. The teachers and administrators are able to share their knowledge and experience, and local craft workers are supported for building traditional handcrafted instruments for the schools.
None of this would be possible without you, and we are grateful for all of the generous support we’ve received. Thank you for sharing the love, and for being part of the community working together to change the world for the better through music. If you haven’t already, there’s still time to bring the gift of music this year. Give today and bring hope and inspiration into the life of a child in need.
This holiday video was recorded live in Brazil, and is dedicated to each and every one of you. Let’s celebrate our time together on this earth and work towards creating a better future for everyone.
From our family to yours, Happy Holidays!!!
