De retour avec un album de reprises soul avec le guitariste Joe Bonamassa, l’Américaine Beth Hart revient sur l’un des plus grands moments de sa vie. Lors d’un concert aux Pays-Bas, elle n’avait pas pu retenir ses larmes face à l’accueil chaleureux du public, se souvenant que quelques années auparavant elle avait connu une période très dure dans sa vie personnelle. En concert le 6 mars au New Morning à Paris, la chanteuse piaffe d’impatience à l’idée de partir en tournée avec Joe Bonamassa pour présenter ces classiques soul.

Le Fil Camille 2006
Camille is a demure French vocalist of extraordinary range. She can sound like everything from a bass guitar to a little girl to a rubber band. As far as delivering a sultry, soulful perfectly pitched vocal, she can do that too, but she also provides vocal percussion, bass, chorus, and an array of clever effects, creating whole songs with just her voice. She’s a female, Gallic Bobby McFerrin coupled with the sexy cooing of Leslie Feist (via the self-actualization of an a capella Bjork). Le Fil, or « the thread, » is a reference to the drone that links and anchors each of the tracks. A sustained hum from Camille in « her note »—the drone « thread » is a galvanizing addition, like adding a rubber wall for her to bounce off of. The range of styles, moods, and energy levels that each song achieves is amazing, especially when considering how organically each springs from this « thread. »
The single off the album, « Ta Douleur (Your Pain) » flows on waves of catchy energy, including an array of bizarre squelching sounds and a heavenly choir over which Camille zigs and zags around her own vocals as if dancing in a house of aural mirrors. Weaving a musical style composed of African and Arabian pop elements while remaining on the ’80s end of the alternative café-chanteuse spectrum, Camille’s prowess for weird mic techniques is simply astounding. « Janine 1 » uses the drone as a backup vocal, providing solid anchor for singsong, scat-rap-style call and response, with one of the interweaving voices recalling Michael Jackson’s on « ABC » or the sound of Ladysmith Black Mambazo—if it was recreated on a French girls’-school playground around the jump rope.
This is so good that by the end of the album you may be thinking you need a thread of your own, a constant drone of humming that makes all the disparate tracks of your life unite, providing a constant that you can hum to center yourself or change key to harmonize into strong chords, or ping-pong off of to create a hypnotic riff as in the mesmerizing « Senza. » Wherever you turn, there’s no denying that Camille is up to some awesome juju with this album, tapping into a primal schoolgirl energy that most of us are forced to dampen at puberty; Camille has rediscovered her inner children, a whole schoolyard full.

Consacrée par son tube Ta douleur, extrait de l’album Le Fil, c’est la révélation 2005 de la scène française. L’Express a suivi pendant une année cette artiste unique, nominée quatre fois aux Victoires de la musique, qui ont lieu le 4 mars

Et c’est sur une autre chanson de Camille «Go away» que se termine ma soirée entre filles à la Musicale, avec Camille, Izia, Anna Calvi, Beth Harth, Lana del Rey, Florence and the machine.
