The Time to Talk About Gun Control…is Now

Voici un extrait d’un article The Time to Talk About Gun Control…is Now que je mémorise sur cette page car il mérite d’y être….Il s’agit de la légalisation de la vente d’armes aux Etats-Unis qui a permis selon l’auteur (c’est mon interprétation) de perpétrer les horribles tueries récentes et anciennes. Mais il ne parle pas que des Etats-Unis « guns don’t kill people, people kill people »…Cet article mérite donc toute notre attention à tous….J’dis ç, j’dis rien…

Author’s Note: I wrote this piece originally on July 21st, 2012 in response to the Aurora, Colorado shooting at the screening on The Dark Knight Rises. It has since been updated to reflect the horrific actions in Newtown, Connecticut.

I feel an innate responsibility to comment on the shooting yesterday. Some people are going to say that now is not the time to talk about gun control. But when would be a good time? People are shot and killed every day in this country. To say that “now is not the time” is just as “political” as to begin talking about gun control–only, as Ezra Klein put it in his blog yesterday, it is to argue for the politics of the status quo. So let’s start talking. As this year (2012) comes to a close, it marks the worst year in mass shootings in modern United States history.

[…]  And if this is about “freedom,” please tell me how someone’s freedom to own a weapon is more important than the freedom of a six-month-old to not get shot. Please explain to the loved ones of the dead in this most recent tragedy how their fallen family members’ freedom to live is not worth more than a freedom to purchase a semi-automatic weapon […]

The Interrupters (2011) – Documentaire

A year in the life of a city grappling with urban violence.

From producer/director Steve James and author-turned-producer Alex Kotlowitz, The Interrupters tells the moving and surprising story of three “violence interrupters” in Chicago who with bravado, humility and even humor try to protect their communities from the violence they once employed. More about the film

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Interrupters is a 2011 documentary film, produced by Kartemquin Films, that tells the story of three violence interrupters who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. It examines a year in which Chicago drew national headlines for violence and murder that plagued the city.

The film features the work of CeaseFire, an initiative of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention. In 2004, Tio Hardiman (Director of CeaseFire Illinois) created and implemented The Violence Interrupter concept. Violence interrupters Ameena Matthews, Cobe Williams and Eddie Bocanegra look back on their past experiences with street violence to try and steer young men and women in the right direction.[1] Matthews, the daughter of former Chicago gang leader Jeff Fort, comes to the aid of the mother of Derrion Albert, a Chicago High School student whose death made national headlines when it was captured on videotape.

Produced by Kartemquin FilmsThe Interrupters is directed by Steve James, director of the highly acclaimed documentary, Hoop Dreams[2], and co-produced byAlex Kotlowitz, author of the award winning book, There Are No Children Here.[3]

We call on the European Union to take decisive action to ensure that European companies trading in, or using minerals from, the African Great Lakes region publish details of their supply chains and carry out due diligence in line with the standards set out by the UN and OECD.
We further urge you to make clear that the E.U. will take swift and severe action if any party breaks the peace deal or instigates mass violence. For too long the E.U. has watched death squads rape, loot and commit grave crimes against humanity, offering only words of condemnation.
Over 5.4 million have perished since 1998. It is time to save the Congo.

“Many of you know the name of a terrorist. How many of you know the name of a survivor?”

Speaking Truth to Terror(changemakers.com)
par Evagelia Emily Tavoulareassept. 16, 2011
One of Ashoka’s ChangemakeHERS honorees, Carie Lemack, reached new heights again this week when her Oscar-nominated film, Killing In The Name, premiered on HBO. The film, a production of the Global Survivors Network (GSN), tackles the taboo subject of terrorism through the journey of Ashraf, a victim of the 2005 bombing of a wedding celebration in Jordan — hiswedding.
[…]
When asked why she decided to make the film, she described a vision that sounds almost like a communications strategy: Al Qaeda distributes videos, so there should be a response from those affected most directly by tragedy.
Her dream is to see airtime given to survivors and victims to respond whenever a terrorist video is shown on the news. She highlighted the role of media in ensuring that survivors and victims are given just as much airtime as the terrorists, and left the audience with this thought:
“Many of you know the name of a terrorist. How many of you know the name of a survivor?”

Bid Farewell to Nuclear Arms

During the standoff of the post-war period between the superpowers, possessing nuclear weapons had a bleak sense to it. The justified fear felt on all sides of their appalling potential consequences kept their use in check. Mutually assured destruction maintained the peace among a handful of nuclear armed nations. 20 years after the end of the cold war, however, the world has changed radically and we need to change our approach to nuclear weapons in consequence.I believe that if governments do not act now by beginning to eliminate all remaining nuclear weapons, we will witness in our lifetimes the detonation of a device by a state or terrorist group. To get governments to act, everyone needs to get involved and we need to bring this issue to the top of the political agenda. As a mother of and a founding leader of the Global Zero movement, I feel very deeply that the only way to safeguard our future is through the phased elimination of all nuclear weapons. The naysayers are wrong; it is not too late to put the nuclear genie back in its bottle, where it belongs. The Global Zero movement, which includes 200 former heads of state, foreign and defense ministers, national security advisers, top military commanders and faith leaders, has put together a compelling a plan to achieve this urgent global imperative.[…]There is still time to change direction and set our course to global zero; but the clock is ticking fast. The international community banned biological and chemical weapons some time ago. There is nothing holding us back from moving in earnest towards the same outcome with nuclear weapons. They belong in humanity’s past; not its future. I entreat all who read this posting to sign the petition and join the Global Zero movement at globalzero.org.
