Below is a letter from Troy Davis who is scheduled to be executed tonight in the state of Georgia in one of the most controversial death penalty cases of the century.

Democracy Now! interviews Troy Davis’ other sister, Kimberly Davis, from Savannah to talk about the global day of action to save her brother. « Even though Martina is sick now in the hospital, she is still fighting from her hospital bed, » Davis says. « We’re not only fighting for justice for Troy, but for the Troy Davises that came before him, for those that will come after him. The fight for Troy Davis has brought a whole family to us … all over the world. »

L’affaire Casey Anthony

Une autre affaire qui a déchaîné l’Amérique cet été, loin devant celle de DSK dixit les médias américains: celle de Casey Anthony. Je ne suis en rien experte en la matière, seulement comme Forbès l’a dit, en cas de preuves irréfutables (ce qui n’a pas été le cas pour Troy Davis), Casey Anthony devrait donc être exécutée. «Seulement, exécuter quelqu’un pour avoir tué, non je passe…». Moi aussi. Par ailleurs elle a été acquittée et va peut être en faire un business avec un livre ou un film. Révoltant !
Pour reprendre les paroles de @Toshikoshi «On veut la peine capitale pour la peine de mort», combattons pour que Troy Davis ne soit mort pour rien…

Echappant à trois chefs d’accusation qui lui auraient valus la peine de mort (en vigueur dans l’état du Texas), elle a tout de même écopé de 4 ans de réclusion mais n’en a purgé que trois au motif de sa bonne conduite. Que va-t-elle faire maintenant qu’elle est libre? Publier un livre et/ou avoir un enfant! De quoi écœurer ceux qui ne l’était pas encore. On lui aurait déjà proposé un million de dollars pour faire un film sur l’affaire. Business is business!

All of this just underscores that the death penalty is a very final, very definitive, and very inhumane way of meting out justice for cases that usually have a built-in amount of gray area. Jurors and judges often have to make decisions with something less than irrefutable, in-your-face, no-way-of-ever-denying-it solid evidence. That doesn’t mean that everyone should get off scot-free with anything less than a video tape of the crime in progress—though even that doesn’t always make for a guilty verdict. Evidence is often in the eye of the beholder.

But if the death penalty is undesirable and uncertain enough for Troy Davis, then it is for Casey Anthony too. Some on Twitter seem to acknowledge this, as this in this Tweet by Joseph Menter: “People keep bringing up Casey Anthony… So y’all want her to be executed too? Fight murder with murder? Naw, I’ll pass.”
